Building the Atlanta Holiday House

Atlanta Holiday House Companion Podcast:

A Special Project for a Special Cause.

Each year, the Atlanta “Home for the Holidays” is a unique opportunity for architects, designers and builders to “show their wares” at a specially selected house in the Atlanta area. The house is transformed into a public showcase and marketplace for three weeks, with tickets sold to the public that benefits the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

In 2021, Waypoint Construction Group had the honor of creating the vertical entablature and pool deck for the Holiday House. The entire project was on a condensed timeline, requiring the coordination of several different teams of builders and designers from across Atlanta. The end result is a glorious luxury home available for the public to see and experience up close.

We take the lessons from working on a one-of-a-kind luxury home experience, and brings it to every home project we create.

Building the Atlanta Holiday House.

Waypoint Construction Group sees the wood structure when they arrive on the job site. Plastic house wrap has been placed for for waterproofing, with stencils marked and cut from the plastic for windows.

Use of rubber washer screws ensures that, as screws are driven into the structure, they seal from water as well. Black paper represents first of three main steps in the build process.

For the front entablature, beautiful Hartstone Tile is used for the vertical work. The entablature form is held with large ratchet straps, and the landing platforms are holding in place until the tile dries. Each tile weights between 150 - 200 pounds.

The tiles are attached to the house using L-brackets, construction adhesive and mortar. With a project like this, you have to be concerned about crush injury. Sometimes you have to tell the homeowner that we’re not going to do it a certain way because it’s unsafe.

The heavy stones have to be level. In this particular case, the entablature height and width of the sidewall was off by one inch. On the live job site, Waypoint mason’s used string line to measure and mark, then hand cut to get the lines perfect.

 Vertical Work with Hartstone Tile

The vertical work took 3.5-4 weeks, and the process is finely tuned due to the special nature of the job. The team dedicated to the entablature work from Waypoint installed 800 square feet of Hartstone Tile in the time frame, as separate crews worked on the other areas of the house.

Master masons performed the stucco work. Waypoint Construction Group always works in partnership with other crews at a job site. Logan Development Group managed the entire project with an established timeline and excellent pre-production. All of the different elements of the Holiday House have to be well coordinated to the builders, and this project was masterfully efficient.

Creating a Perfect Luxury Pool Deck and Patio

Pool Deck Area: Constructed by Neptune Pools, with Nick Papas as the designer. Waypoint Construction has had the pleasure of working with Neptune Pools on several projects.

This pool deck was a simpler endeavor, in that it was flat work. Waypoint had a separate team working on the pool deck and the pool coping, while the masonry team at the front of the Holiday House stayed on task with the entablature. The pool deck area was 2000 square feet of flat work, accomplished in a single week.

In addition to the pool deck, all the water features and accents, such as an outdoor shower and dog wash, were fashioned with Hartstone Tile, the most trusted hard surface paver and stone utilized by Waypoint Construction Group.

The Transformed Holiday Home.

Truly a “One of One,” this was a true honor to be involved with the Atlanta Holiday House. With our work at Waypoint Construction on display in such a unique setting, the general public was given the opportunity to view our specialty work up close that might not have otherwise.

The Atlanta Holiday House was a unique challenge in many respects. Compressed timeline requires the skills to adjust you work on the fly and stay sharp as craftsmen.

The house work remains once the event is closed. We are not just working for the showcase, we are working for the individual that will live in the house for many years to come.

The Atlanta Holiday House is a yearly project. When in Atlanta during the holiday season, we encourage you to attend and support a great cause for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The general public is immersed in the highest levels of design and construction work. You see how an architects and interior designers work within a unique home.
