Pool Remodel: Case Study #1
Pool Remodel Companion Podcast:
How it Began.
A beautiful 1950’s home in the Atlanta country club area. The blue tile and lions head sculpture were classic, elegant Atlanta architecture 40 years ago. For a young couple in their 30’s, it was time for an updated look and functionality.
Total size of the pool decking is about 1300 square feet. The existing brick wall blocked the view to an extensive back yard. Pool is a standard 16 x 32 foot size, and at one point, the Lion’s Head wall sconce had dedicating piping for water to flow into the spa.
When you take a full view approach, as we do at Waypoint, you look at how to improve the entire patio entertaining area. The kitchen was practically unusable, the single step being a trip hazard.
The Process.
One of the first steps was to reset the decking, and reestablish the deck grade. Completely stripped the existing pool deck, removed the lion’s head sconce and water feature.
Custom coping by our partners at Hartstone Tile, the spa is remodeled with quartz tile. Re-pebbled the interior of the pool and spa for a fresh pebble look.
The kitchen was unable. Removed the columns, remade the roof structure, and dried everything in. Homeowner realized the entertainment value of that area. Brought the bar area out, removed the step.
Making a stone wall with fencing to re-establish the lawn evolved as the project went along. The couple had young kids at the time, they knew eventually they’d need a big lawn. The wall is lowered almost 2 and 1/2 feet, revealing the back yard.
Pool deck is a cut stone from south central supply, not a very thick product. The entry is properly level to the pool deck area, with trip hazard step removed.
The smooth granite countertop flows in view with the natural gray stonework on the patio deck. you see that the kitchen has a clear view of the pool and the lawn. Safety of our children comes first, now the chef always faces out to patio area.
The Result.
Two-level flower boxes on image right, as you enter the pool deck area. Natural boulder retaining wall constructed in the yard, with proper fencing around the perimeter. Minimally invasive, we worked within the space available, no expansion of the foundation. Just a beautiful end result.
Our family can properly entertain guests. The granite countertop on top of the brick half wall matches the grey and brick aesthetic of the entire renovation. Simple column design creates a “picture window” frame looking out or into the kitchen.
Added counter space, the buffet space that did not previously exist. The kitchen is outfitted with modern appliances, including gas grill with proper orientation. The master chef never has to turn their back to the pool while cooking and entertaining.
