Pool Renovation: Case Study #4

Pool Renovation Companion Podcast:

Laying the Foundation.

Removal of the existing pool deck.

This is a classic Atlanta home, with a 30-year pool that had run through the first life cycle. Existing pool deck was old limestone that had deteriorated over the years. Main reason it deteriorated was that it was not sealed and protected. Saltwater and limestone hate each other.

The objectives were restoration of the pool deck, clean up the old hedge, and have access to the jacuzzi. The homeowners now had grand kids, and wanted a fresh pool deck area that would last for the next generation. The new pool deck is Indiana limestone.

We remove the water, find the soft spots in the bottom of the pool. Equipment is tested ahead of time, it has been put under pressure underwater, we know what works. Modern code requires two drains in the bottom of a pool, and we added a second drain.

Applying the Surface.

The pebble being applied.

After we strip the existing pool surface, the pebble is applied as a blue, pasted compound.

Our expert brings out the “pebble sheen”.

The “pebble sheen” is from the very fine consistency of the pebble and having a reflective surface. Once applied, revealed and finished, the pebble reflects a beautiful royal blue of the water.

The “reveal” of the fine pebble.

The paste is sprayed with muriatic acid and pressure washed, revealing the beautiful black pebble.

“Pebble Tech” (not technically on this project) made by ASI, a pebble company. Quality of the pebble is focus of this project.

Sealing the revealed pebble.

The surface is sealed and smoothed to guarantee durability and desired feel for the homeowners and their guests.

Near completion, ready to be filled.

If you have limestone coping (common), make sure you protect and seal it properly. We’ve maintained this pool deck for over seven years. We have a clean and seal service which is a saltwater inhibitor.

The Result.

The finished project succeeds at having a beautiful new pool, a spa that has easier access, and a remade back yard that frames the entire aesthetic. For the cut tile on the pool itself, a special template made for this particular pool design, and each piece of title was custom cut. The template is an “a-la-carte” item that we strongly encourage, which creates the seamless grout work.

We raised the wall to the yard, worked with a landscaper to remove the shrubs, bushes, and unwanted tree growth. The pool itself, with the pebble sheen, reflects a beautiful Caribbean blue water, a perfect back yard oasis.
